Strive Consultancy Founder Story: Shuayb J Biography and Helping African Professionals Mission

I do not often share my personal story publicly. But as Strive Consultancy grows and I work with more professionals across Africa, I have realized that the story behind this platform matters. It explains our mission, our values, and why we approach our work differently. So here it is.

The Strive Consultancy founder story of Shuayb J. reveals a deep commitment to helping African professionals access global opportunities through strategic guidance and support.

Shuayb J Biography: African Consultancy Mission for Helping African Professionals

Strive Consultancy Founder Story: Mission to Help African Professionals

I began my career as a lecturer at Jimma University in Ethiopia. In many ways, this was the most formative period of my professional life. Working with students every day, I witnessed something that troubled me deeply: bright, motivated students who dreamed of studying abroad or building international careers but had no idea how to navigate the system.

These students had the talent. They had the drive. What they lacked was information, strategy, and guidance. Scholarship opportunities existed but were not accessible to them because the application process was designed in a way that favored those who already had access to advice and resources. I began unofficially advising students on their applications — and saw remarkable results when they applied with the right strategy. Over time, I identified the most common mistakes that hold African students back.

The Turning Point: A Student’s Success Story

I remember one student in particular. She was from a rural area, had attended a public university, and dreamed of pursuing a master's degree in public health. Everyone told her it was impossible — she did not have the connections, the grades, or the financial resources. But she had determination and a willingness to learn.

Over six months, we worked together on her applications. She improved her English, crafted a compelling personal statement, identified programs that matched her background, and prepared thoroughly for interviews. When she received a fully funded scholarship to study public health at a top European university, I felt a mix of pride and frustration — pride in her achievement, but frustration that so many others with equal potential would never have the same opportunity simply because they did not know how to navigate the process.

That experience planted the seed for what would eventually become Strive Consultancy. Today, we continue to help African professionals achieve similar success — as demonstrated in our detailed Yale scholarship case study.

The Corporate Training Years: Where I Learned About Systems

After my time at the university, I moved into the banking sector in Ethiopia as a corporate trainer. Those years taught me something unexpected: how systems and processes shape outcomes — and how access to the right knowledge and training can transform individual and organizational performance. I saw how talented, hardworking professionals were often held back not by their own limitations but by a lack of strategic direction and guidance.

Working as a corporate trainer gave me a front-row seat to how institutions operate and how professional development opportunities are distributed. I became fascinated by the question: what would happen if we could redesign access to knowledge and opportunity to give more people the resources they need to succeed? The combination of my university experience — seeing students miss life-changing opportunities — and my corporate experience — seeing how training could unlock potential — created a powerful vision.

Building Strive Consultancy: What We Stand For

When I decided to build Strive Consultancy full-time, I had a clear vision: create a platform that democratizes access to global opportunities for African professionals. Not by doing the work for them, but by providing the guidance, strategy, and resources they need to succeed on their own terms.

Our approach is based on three principles:

  • Empowerment over dependency: We teach skills, not shortcuts. Our goal is that every client becomes self-sufficient in navigating opportunities.
  • Context matters: African professionals face unique challenges and opportunities. Generic advice from Western career coaches often misses the mark. We build strategies that account for the real context our clients operate in.
  • Long-term relationships: We do not view our work as a one-time transaction. Many of our clients return years later for advice on new career stages — and we celebrate their growth as our success.

Scholarship Platform Founder: Continuing the African Consultancy Mission

I am based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Every day, I see the potential of African professionals all around me — in the streets, in the universities, in the coffee shops where young people gather to discuss their ideas. The talent is abundant. What is missing is access: access to information, access to networks, access to strategic guidance. The scholarship landscape is constantly evolving, and staying informed is critical for success.

Closing that gap is the mission of Strive Consultancy. It is why I wake up every morning and do this work. And as our platform grows, my commitment remains the same: to provide the highest quality guidance and resources to help African professionals transform their ambitions into achievements, one application at a time. Whether you are seeking scholarships or building a global career from Africa, our framework can guide your journey.
